Physiotherapy - What to expect
Assessment
This usually scheduled for 40 minutes, but can be longer depending on your condition. We take a full history and perform a thorough physical examination. One of the objectives of the initial assessment is to locate the source of your problem and to establish a provisional diagnosis. We will also address how your injury is affecting you with your day to day activities, hobbies or sport. Importantly, we identify your own personal functional goals and create problem based strategies to assist in achieving them. At the conclusion of the assessment, we give you an explanation of the findings in terms that you can understand. We will discuss with you how we can assist you with your recovery and endeavour to provide you with an indication of the estimated length of time for your injury to resolve.
Treatment modalities:
Manual Therapy is generally our primary approach to treatment. We use our hands for massage, joint mobilisation , gentle joint manipulation and muscle stretches. Treatments usually last between 15-30 mins
Acupuncture is a way of tapping into your body's natural healing process. BodyZone Physiotherapists are trained to use it gently and safetly for muscle and joint pain problems in conjunction with other therapeutic techniques. We also utilise "dry needling" for the treatment of trigger points and for persons with myofascial pain syndrome. Dry needling is an invasive procedure in which an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point. A myofascial trigger point consists of multiple contraction knots, which are related to the production and maintenance of the pain cycle. Proper dry needling of a myofascial trigger point will elicit a local twitch response (LTR), which is an involuntary spinal cord reflex in which the muscle fibers in the taut band of muscle contract. The LTR indicates the proper placement of the needle in a trigger point. Research has indicated that dry needling that elicits LTRs improves treatment outcomes.
Electrotherapy. We use Interferential and TENS as indicated.
Excercises are taught and are tailored to your specific needs. Strengthening exercises are generally graduated and progressive , aiming to systematically increase strength and stability. Mobility exercises will directed at improving flexibilty and muscle balance. All of this is an important part of addressing prevention and lessening liklihood of recurrence.
Education is not underestimated at BodyZone Physiotherapy. A basic and understanding of your injury and the clinical reasoning behind the choice of treatment modality allows you to take an active part in the rehabilitation process. Your involvement plays a vital role in achieving a prompt and full recovery.
About Acupuncture
If acupuncture is indicated as a modality that may be of help in the treatment of your condition BodyZone Physiotherapy requires that you are fully informed and then you will need to read and sign an "Acupuncture Informed Consent Form" for our records.
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese system of healing based on achieving harmony in the body by stimulating and restoring the energy flow or 'Qi'. This energy is believed to flow through a system of channels in the body, each of which links up with a particular organ and regulates body functions.
Each channel can be mapped on the surface of the body and specific acupuncture points on the channels can be identified. Needling these points can affect the flow of energy to re-establish equilibrium in the body. It is also believed that the insertion of acupuncture needles stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.
The needles used are fine gauge and left in place for between 5 and 30 minutes. Only disposable, pre-sterile needles are used and they are disposed of immediately after use.
People react differently to acupuncture. Occasionally there may be some transient symptoms of fatigue, faintness agavation of the symptoms. These symptoms must be reported.

ACC can cover sports, non-workplace and workplace injuries. Large companies, however, may have "accredited employer status" and look after their own workers for work related accidents. Check with your employer first, as you may require prior approval before presenting for physiotherapy. ACC forms referring you to Physiotherapy may have been provided by your doctor and you should bring these with you to your initial appointment. ACC forms can also be completed at BodyZone Physiotherapy directly at the time of presenting for treatment. If you have already received treatment before on ACC for your injury, please let our reception staff know. We regret the necessity to charge for a missed appointment unless the clinic is notified 3 hours prior to the time of your appointment. Clients with medical insurance may be able to claim for physiotherapy fees with their own private insurers. Please enquire with your insurer as to whether, and to what extent, physiotherapy is covered on your policy.
